Week 2: Dangers of the internet

As we all know, in the 21st century, the advancement of technology is rapidly increasing, which results in the further advancement of the internet and its usage. To this day, the internet is believe by many to have opened up unprecedented resources for research, but like all technology, it comes with dangers.

The unprecedented resources for research is inclusive of the numerous search engines that can be found on the internet. These search engines are tools that can be used to help people find detailed information or for them to further understand the subject or topic that is being inquired by the user. These tools are mainly used to search for websites, images, videos and other information pertaining to their subject of investigation. Since the filter policy is not used for famous engines such as Google and Yahoo, users can, to some extent, used it freely to search about any subject that they want to know more about.

The open resources of the internet have both positive and negative aspects about it. If people use the open resources in a negative way it will be very dangerous for them. The maximum risks influence the youth and the Web is a dangerous place for some of them. It can be dangerous for their maturity because the internet resources allow them to search for any word that they want. For example they can watch any videos in YouTube and the irrelevant videos may influence their behavior.

The open resources can be positive for researchers because they can find much information about their research on the internet. For example some countries have filtering policy for all websites and it is very hard for researchers to find their information online. It can be clearly seen that the unprecedented resources are more dangerous for the younger generation. The best way to prevent these dangers is to teach the proper use of internet to youths.

Tan Mei Kuan : Session Two: Recovery Methods

Computer is indispensable in this day and age but computer addiction could disrupt sleep patterns, relationships and academic performance. This brings me to the theme of my post : Setting time limits. I will focus on setting time limits as one of the methods used around the world to help people recover from computer addiction. I will also discuss the pros and cons of this method.
Most people find themselves on the Internet longer than they intended. The "next game" or "next episode" button always appears tempting and interesting. Therefore, it is important to set a time limit. The key to setting time limit is moderation. A reasonable time limit that fits your lifestyle is easier to follow.
After deciding on a suitable time limit, the next step is to enforce and adhere to the time limit. If you are a parent, you can reward your children when they follow the rules and punish them when they violate it. You can give them a five minute warning before turning off the computer. As a parent, you can be a role model by following the time limit yourself. If you are battling the time limit yourself, you can ask your family members to provide you with constant reminders, use a timer to remind yourself or schedule your computer to turn off automatically at specific time. Every time you turn off your computer, remind yourself that you will be able to continue again tomorrow. In my opinion, following the time limit for 30 days are enough to break the old habit.
Setting a time limit will lead to good time management. You will have a healthy bedtime and wake up time. Besides that, there will be time for computer and also time to engage in other outdoor physical activities to have some non-computer related fun. Next, there will be a balanced time spend on socializing online and socializing face-to-face.
The cons of this method is that in reality, it seldom works as it requires tremendous dedication and self-control. In the case of teenagers, it is even harder to control as they can access the computer in the privacy of their bedroom. It is difficult for parents to supervise and monitor their children in making sure the time limits are followed because they are almost always busy working.
In conclusion, it is advisable to set time limits on computer usage to beat computer addiction.

It's the dude that makes up the addiction: on Internet addiction and susceptible personalities

So we did this exercise in class on Internet addictions. In the case of my group, we were supposed to analyse the makeup of an Internet addict's personality and classify their character profiles according to the types of Internet addictions there are. Here's what we found:

1) If you have pornographic/ cybersexual addiction, you are more likely to be:

  • male (duh)
  • have an untreated sexual dysfunction (????)
  • be uncomfortable in romantic relationships/ interacting with whichever gender you prefer, i.e. romantically awkward
  • or maybe when it comes to the real deal, you're just stone cold (have seen anime geeks abusing real-life ladies on forums; about how they're uglier/ fatter/ less sweet compared to those waif-like 2D idols)
2) If you have an addiction to interactive online applications, you could be:

  • shy and socially inept. You get easily anxious in face-to-face interactions; may be a loner or a wallflower.
  • low in self-esteem. Again, the above.
  • wanting to be someone else.
3) If you're addicted to online gaming/ shopping/ gambling etc., you might be:
  • easily bored and have no other hobbies
  • sick of your life (that's sad :( )

And that's about it. Please bear in mind that we do NOT refer to specific people or intend to insult you in this report. (Uhhh...who are you even?) Until next time!

P.S. Was typing this as my groupmates giggled nonstop  in the background. Would you know any kind of airborne chemicals that could've caused this? (Maybe like mold or paint chips?) =_=U......
